The Verse of Song
The Verse of Song is a form of music used during marches and military engagements originally devised by the goblin Amxu Stolenardent. The rules of the form are applied by composers to produce individual pieces of music which can be performed. The music is played on a anga and two zong. The musical voices bring melody and counterpoint. The entire performance should be fiery. The counterpoint melody has short phrases throughout the form. The music repeats for as long as necessary. It is performed without preference for a scale and in free rhythm.
- The anga always does the main melody and is to fade into silence.
- Each zong always does the counterpoint melody and is to be moderately loud.
- The Verse of Song has a well-defined multi-passage structure: a lengthy theme and one to two lengthy series of variations on the theme and a lengthy finale.
- The theme is extremely fast. The passage has long phrases in the melody. This passage is richly layered with full chords making use of the available range.
- Each of the series of variations is consistently slowing. Each passage has mid-length phrases in the melody. Chords are packed close together in dense clusters in this passage.
- The finale slows and broadens. The passage has phrases of varied length in the melody. Chords are packed close together in dense clusters in this passage. The passage should be composed and performed using arpeggios.
