The Petals of Bewildering
The Petals of Bewildering is a form of music used for entertainment originally devised by the dwarf Iden Coverwheel. The form guides musicians during improvised performances. A speaker recites nonsensical words and sounds while the music is played on a ekast. The musical voices are joined in melody. The entire performance should be fiery and is consistently slowing. The melody has phrases of varied length throughout the form. It is performed without preference for a scale and in free rhythm. Throughout, when possible, performers are to alternate tension and repose.
- The ekast always does the main melody and uses mordents.
- The Petals of Bewildering has a well-defined multi-passage structure: an introduction, a lengthy passage and a finale.
- The introduction is to be very loud. This passage is richly layered with full chords making use of the available range. The passage should be performed using rapid runs.
- The simple passage is to be soft. Only one pitch is ever played at a time in this passage.
- The finale is to be loud. This passage is richly layered with full chords making use of the available range.
