The Sweet Lessons
The Sweet Lessons is a poetic riddle concerning someone recently retired, originating in The Lantern of Nails. The rules of the form are applied by poets to produce individual poems which can be recited. The poem is divided into three distinct parts: a line, another line and a quintain. Each line has six syllables.
- The first part is intended to praise the subject of the poem.
- The second part is intended to reflect on previous ideas.
- The third part is intended to offer a different perspective. Certain lines often share an underlying meaning and reverse grammatical structures. The fourth line of the quintain presents a different view of the subject of the first line. The third line of the quintain must expand the idea of the second line.
