The Learning of Songs

The Learning of Songs is a poetic form intended to praise a chosen subject originally devised by the elf Vadane Drummedsister. The rules of the form are applied by poets to produce individual poems which can be recited. The poem is divided into three distinct parts: four tercets, two eighteen-line stanzas and two quatrains. Use of simile is characteristic of the form. Each line has three syllables.

• The first part is solemn and concerns the past.
• The second part is dramatic and concerns current events.
• The third part is a narrative and concerns the future.
